1. In a large mixing bowl, combine burger ingredients. Form into equal sized patties – use a burger press if available.
2. In a small to medium pot, over low-to-medium heat, add the 1 tsp each of oil and butter and the onions, along with some salt and pepper. Let them cook, stirring occasionally, until they are nice and caramelized.
3. Grill the burger patties over medium heat until they reach a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees F.
4. Serve on a bun topped with smoked gouda (thinly sliced), BBQ sauce, and caramelized onions.
